Attentive Review 2026: Enterprise SMS Marketing for Shopify Brands

We have managed SMS programs on Attentive across 30+ DTC Shopify brands over the past four years. Some brands generated life-changing revenue from it. Others found themselves locked into expensive contracts for a channel they were not ready to scale. The difference comes down to volume, sophistication, and whether your SMS program justifies a dedicated platform versus running it through your existing email tool.
Here is our full breakdown after thousands of campaigns and tens of millions of messages sent.
What It Does
Attentive is an AI-powered SMS, email, and RCS marketing platform built for ecommerce brands that want to treat text messaging as a serious revenue channel. It solves a specific problem: most email platforms bolted SMS on as an afterthought. Attentive was built SMS-first, which means its subscriber acquisition, compliance infrastructure, segmentation, and deliverability are purpose-built for the unique demands of text marketing.
The platform handles everything from growing your SMS list through patented sign-up technology to sending personalized, AI-optimized campaigns and triggered flows. It also now covers email, push notifications, and RCS (Rich Communication Services) for brands that want rich media messaging.
Attentive is designed for mid-market to enterprise Shopify brands that are serious about SMS as a primary revenue driver, not brands testing the waters with a hundred subscribers.
Key Features
Two-Tap Sign-Up Technology Attentive's patented two-tap opt-in is the single most effective SMS list-building tool we have used. A visitor taps a button on mobile, their native messaging app opens with a pre-filled text, they tap send, and they are subscribed. No typing a phone number. No clunky form fields. Conversion rates on two-tap units consistently outperform traditional SMS sign-up forms by 2-3x across our client accounts. The platform also offers pop-ups, embedded forms, checkout opt-ins, and social media sign-up integrations.
Attentive Signal (Identity Resolution) Signal identifies anonymous website visitors by matching them against Attentive's network data, then enables you to target those visitors with personalized messaging. Think of it as an SMS-specific identity graph. For brands with significant anonymous traffic, Signal can meaningfully expand your addressable subscriber base beyond traditional opt-in methods. It claims a 98.7% SMS deliverability rate across its infrastructure.
AI Journeys (Automated Triggered Messaging) This is where Attentive's AI capabilities shine. AI Journeys automatically tailors every aspect of your triggered messages based on each subscriber's behavioral patterns. Using predictive and generative AI, it determines when to send, how many messages to send, and what the content should be, including images, copy length, brand voice, and link destinations. For abandoned cart, browse abandonment, back-in-stock, and post-purchase flows, AI Journeys eliminates the manual optimization that typically requires a dedicated lifecycle marketer.
AI Pro (Campaign Optimization) AI Pro extends the AI Journeys intelligence to your manual campaigns. It automatically adjusts campaign audiences based on historical and real-time data, adding subscribers likely to purchase and suppressing those unlikely to convert. It also determines optimal send times per subscriber and crafts on-brand content variations. Nearly half of Attentive's customer base now runs AI-powered campaigns, and the brands we manage on AI Pro consistently see higher revenue per message than manually optimized sends.
AI Grow (List Growth Optimization) AI Grow personalizes the sign-up experience itself, testing and optimizing your subscriber acquisition units in real time. It adjusts offers, creative, timing, and targeting to maximize opt-in rates without manual A/B testing. For brands spending heavily on paid traffic, this means more of that traffic converts into owned SMS subscribers.
Cross-Channel Orchestration Attentive now supports SMS, email, RCS, and push notifications from a single platform with unified subscriber profiles. You can build journeys that span channels, suppress email subscribers who already received an SMS, and coordinate messaging across touchpoints. The email product has matured significantly, and brands like Frye have reported 576% email revenue growth after consolidating onto Attentive.
100+ Integrations Native integrations with Shopify, Klaviyo, Salesforce, Zendesk, Recharge, Loop, Rebuy, Snowflake, and more. The Shopify integration is plug-and-play, typically taking under 10 minutes to connect. It syncs order data, product catalog, and customer information directly into the platform for behavioral targeting and automated flows. The platform has driven $1.2B+ in recovered revenue through abandoned cart flows across its integration network.
Compliance and Deliverability Built-in TCPA compliance, quiet hours enforcement, carrier-level deliverability optimization, and enterprise-grade security. This matters more than most brands realize. A single compliance violation can result in six-figure fines. Attentive handles consent management, opt-out processing, and regulatory requirements across 20+ countries so you do not have to build that infrastructure yourself.
Pricing
Attentive does not publish fixed pricing tiers. Everything is custom-quoted through their sales team, which is both a strength (tailored to your needs) and a frustration (impossible to budget without a conversation).
Here is what we know from managing accounts across multiple spend levels:
Platform Fee: Starting around $300/month as a base, scaling with features and channels selected.
Per-Message Costs: SMS messages run approximately $0.01 each. MMS messages cost $0.02-$0.03 depending on media size. You are also charged for subscriber replies, which is unique to Attentive and adds up for brands with high engagement.
Minimum Spend: Expect a quarterly minimum commitment of $2,000-$3,000. You are billed for the committed amount even if your usage falls below that threshold.
Contract Terms: Typically 6-12 month minimum commitments. Early termination involves financial penalties, and some contracts include SMS exclusivity clauses that prevent you from running SMS through another platform simultaneously.
Channel Packages:
- Text Only -- SMS, MMS, and RCS. Pay per message plus subscriber count.
- Text and Email -- Combined SMS and email. Priced on list size and message volume.
- Text, Email, and Push -- Premium package with built-in savings for the full channel suite.
AI Add-Ons:
- AI Essentials -- Included free with all plans.
- AI Pro -- Flat monthly fee for predictive analytics and campaign optimization.
- AI Grow -- Flat monthly fee for automated sign-up optimization.
- AI Journeys -- Pay-per-click model for automated 1:1 triggered messaging.
Shopify App Store: Listed as "Free to install" with a minimum 30-day free trial. Additional charges are billed separately by Attentive after the trial period.
Realistic Budget Expectations: For a mid-market Shopify brand sending 100K-500K SMS messages per month, expect total costs of $3,000-$10,000 monthly including platform fees, message costs, and AI add-ons. Enterprise brands with larger lists and higher volumes can easily spend $15,000-$30,000+ per month.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Two-tap sign-up technology genuinely converts better than any alternative we have tested. It is Attentive's clearest competitive advantage.
- AI Journeys and AI Pro deliver measurable revenue lifts over manually optimized campaigns, with less ongoing maintenance.
- SMS-first architecture means deliverability, compliance, and list management are robust in ways that bolt-on SMS features from email platforms cannot match.
- Attentive Signal identity resolution expands your addressable audience beyond traditional opt-ins.
- Cross-channel capabilities have matured to the point where running email on Attentive is now a legitimate alternative to a separate ESP.
- The Shopify integration is genuinely plug-and-play. Setup takes minutes, not days.
- Enterprise-grade compliance infrastructure removes significant legal risk from your SMS program.
- Brands like Steve Madden report 20X ROI. That aligns with what we see on well-run accounts at scale.
Cons
- Pricing is completely opaque. You cannot budget for Attentive without sitting through a sales process, and minimum commitments lock you in even if performance disappoints.
- Contract exclusivity clauses can prevent you from running SMS through Klaviyo or Postscript simultaneously, which limits flexibility.
- Attribution uses an aggressive 30-day click window that can overstate SMS-driven revenue. Compare against your own analytics before taking Attentive's reported ROI at face value.
- Integration with Klaviyo can be problematic. We have seen subscriber data fail to sync correctly, causing Klaviyo flows to miss SMS subscribers entirely.
- Not cost-effective for small brands. If you are sending fewer than 50,000 messages per month, you are likely overpaying relative to alternatives.
- Charging for inbound subscriber replies adds cost that other platforms absorb.
- Running a separate SMS platform from your email platform creates operational overhead, duplicate audience management, and attribution conflicts.
Who It Is Best For
Strong fit:
- Shopify brands doing $5M+ annually that treat SMS as a primary revenue channel, not an experiment
- Brands with 50,000+ SMS subscribers that need enterprise-level deliverability and compliance
- DTC companies running aggressive list growth campaigns that can capitalize on two-tap sign-up technology
- Brands ready to invest in AI-driven personalization across triggered flows and campaigns
- Multi-channel marketers who want SMS, email, RCS, and push consolidated under one platform
Less ideal for:
- Brands under $3M in annual revenue where SMS volume does not justify the minimum spend
- Shopify stores already running Klaviyo SMS that would gain more from deeper integration with their email platform than from switching to a standalone SMS tool
- Brands that want transparent, self-serve pricing without sales calls and contract negotiations
- Single-channel operators who only need basic abandoned cart texts and promotional blasts
- Brands with small SMS lists under 10,000 subscribers where Postscript or Klaviyo SMS would deliver comparable results at lower cost
How to Get Started
- Install the Shopify app. Search for "Attentive" in the Shopify App Store. Installation is free with a minimum 30-day trial.
- Connect your Shopify data. The integration syncs orders, products, and customer data automatically. Setup takes under 10 minutes.
- Set up sign-up units. Deploy two-tap pop-ups and embedded forms on your store. Attentive provides templates, or AI Grow can optimize placements automatically.
- Build your core flows. At minimum, set up abandoned cart, welcome series, browse abandonment, and post-purchase sequences. AI Journeys can handle optimization once these are live.
- Connect your other platforms. Integrate with your ESP, loyalty program, subscription tool, and ad platforms for unified data.
- Launch your first campaign. Start with your highest-intent segments and expand as you learn what resonates.
- Allow 30-60 days for meaningful data. SMS list growth takes time. Do not judge Attentive's value based on the first two weeks when your list is still small.
Expect full operational maturity in 60-90 days, assuming you are actively driving list growth and sending a consistent campaign cadence.
Our Verdict
Rating: 7.5 out of 10
Attentive is the best dedicated SMS marketing platform available for Shopify brands that have outgrown basic text messaging. The two-tap sign-up technology, AI-powered campaign optimization, and enterprise compliance infrastructure are genuine differentiators that justify the premium for brands with the volume to support it.
Where it loses points is pricing transparency, contractual rigidity, and the operational complexity of managing a separate SMS platform alongside your email tool. The aggressive attribution window also means you need to verify Attentive's reported ROI against your own data before celebrating those 20X return claims.
The critical question is whether your brand needs a dedicated SMS platform at all. If you are already on Klaviyo and sending SMS through it, the incremental benefit of switching to Attentive may not justify the cost, complexity, and data sync risks. But if you are doing $5M+ in revenue, have 50,000+ SMS subscribers, and want to push the ceiling on what SMS can deliver for your business, Attentive's AI capabilities and list growth tools will outperform anything a bolt-on SMS feature can offer.
Our recommendation: request a demo and negotiate hard on contract terms. Push for month-to-month or quarterly commitments rather than annual contracts. Start with SMS-only pricing before layering on email and AI add-ons, and validate the ROI against your own attribution data in the first 90 days before committing long-term.
