Hotjar Review 2026: Heatmaps, Session Recordings & Feedback for Shopify

Hotjar Review 2026: Heatmaps, Session Recordings & Feedback for Shopify
Google Analytics tells you what is happening on your Shopify store. Hotjar tells you why.
That distinction matters more than most brands realize. You can stare at a 67% cart abandonment rate in GA4 all day, but until you watch a real customer rage-click your checkout button six times because it overlaps with a promo banner on mobile, you have no idea how to fix it.
Hotjar (now part of Contentsquare) remains one of the most widely used behavior analytics tools in ecommerce. Brands like Ruggable, Simple Modern, and FabFitFun all rely on it. But with the Contentsquare merger reshaping the product and pricing, is Hotjar still the right pick for your Shopify store in 2026?
We use behavior analytics tools across dozens of DTC client accounts. Here is our honest breakdown.
What It Does
Hotjar is a qualitative analytics platform that shows you how real users interact with your website through visual tools: heatmaps, session recordings, surveys, and feedback widgets.
Where Google Analytics gives you aggregate numbers ("2,300 users visited your product page"), Hotjar gives you the texture behind those numbers. You see exactly where users click, how far they scroll, where they hesitate, and where they leave. For Shopify merchants specifically, this means identifying the exact friction points between "add to cart" and "order confirmed."
The platform now lives under the Contentsquare umbrella, which has expanded its capabilities while keeping the core product accessible for small and mid-sized stores.
Key Features
1. Heatmaps
Hotjar's signature feature. Heatmaps generate visual overlays showing click density, scroll depth, and mouse movement across any page on your store. You get three types:
- Click maps reveal which elements users actually interact with (and which they ignore entirely)
- Scroll maps show exactly where attention drops off on long product pages or landing pages
- Move maps track cursor movement, which roughly correlates with eye tracking
For Shopify stores, this is invaluable for product page optimization. We have seen brands discover that 60% of visitors never scroll past the first product image, meaning all those carefully written product descriptions below the fold are invisible.
2. Session Recordings
Watch real user sessions from start to finish. You see every click, scroll, page transition, and moment of hesitation. Hotjar records these anonymously and lets you filter by specific behaviors: rage clicks, u-turns, pages visited, device type, and more.
The rage click filter alone is worth the subscription. It surfaces sessions where users repeatedly click non-interactive elements, which is often a sign of broken UI or confusing design. On Shopify stores, we frequently catch checkout issues, variant selector confusion, and mobile navigation breakdowns through session recordings.
3. Funnels
Visualize step-by-step drop-off through critical conversion paths. Map your homepage to collection page to product page to cart to checkout flow, and see precisely where people abandon the journey. This pairs perfectly with session recordings: identify the where with funnels, then watch the why in recordings.
4. Surveys and Feedback Widgets
Deploy targeted on-site surveys and persistent feedback widgets. You can trigger surveys based on specific actions (scroll depth, time on page, exit intent) and collect both quantitative ratings and open-ended responses.
Post-purchase surveys are particularly powerful for Shopify brands. Ask "How did you first hear about us?" on the order confirmation page and you finally get attribution data that no pixel can provide. The platform includes 40+ survey templates, AI-generated question suggestions, and sentiment analysis on responses.
5. User Interviews and Testing
A newer addition to the platform. Recruit participants, run unmoderated user tests on your site or prototypes, and conduct live interviews. For brands redesigning their store or launching new product lines, this removes the guesswork from UX decisions.
6. Sense AI
Contentsquare's AI layer now integrated into Hotjar. It surfaces anomalies in user behavior, summarizes session recordings at scale, and highlights areas of opportunity you might miss manually. It is not a replacement for human analysis, but it accelerates the process significantly when you are reviewing hundreds of recordings.
7. Integrations
Hotjar connects with the tools Shopify brands already use: Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Slack, HubSpot, Segment, Zapier, Optimizely, and Unbounce. The Slack integration is particularly useful for piping survey responses and rage click alerts directly into your team's workflow.
Pricing
Hotjar restructured its pricing under Contentsquare in 2025. The platform now uses usage-based pricing across three product categories. Here is the current breakdown:
Experience Analytics (Heatmaps, Recordings, Funnels)
| Plan | Price | Sessions/Month | Key Features | |------|-------|-----------------|--------------| | Free | $0 | 200K | 1 project, heatmaps, replays, funnels, basic error monitoring | | Growth | From $49/mo | 7K-200K+ | 13-month data retention, zone-based heatmaps, journey analysis, Sense AI | | Pro | Custom | 1M+ | 3 projects, precision filtering, revenue tracking, multi-session replay summaries | | Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Unlimited projects, experience monitoring, data feeds, dedicated support |
Voice of Customer (Surveys, Feedback)
| Plan | Price | Responses/Month | Key Features | |------|-------|-----------------|--------------| | Free | $0 | 100 | Surveys, feedback widgets, AI survey generator, replay integration | | Growth | From $99/mo | 500-100K | Advanced targeting, AI analysis, branding customization, 11+ integrations | | Pro | Custom | 6K+/year | Panel recruitment, API access, 120-minute interviews, team moderators |
Product Analytics
| Plan | Price | Sessions/Month | Key Features | |------|-------|-----------------|--------------| | Free | $0 | 10K | Core charts, dashboards, 6-month data history | | Growth | Custom | 17K+ | Sense AI, unlimited reports, 12-month history | | Pro | Custom | 33K+ | Account analytics, engagement matrix, report alerts |
For most Shopify stores, the Free tier of Experience Analytics paired with the Free tier of Voice of Customer is enough to start. When you outgrow those limits, the Growth tier at $49/month for analytics is reasonable for the insight you get. The modules price independently, so you only pay for what you use.
One important note: unlike the old Hotjar model that sampled data when you hit daily limits, the new usage-based model captures all sessions until your monthly limit, then stops. No sampling, but also no data once you hit the cap.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Dead simple setup on Shopify. Paste a tracking code snippet into your theme, or use one of several Shopify App Store integrations. No developer needed. Takes under five minutes.
- Generous free tier. 200K monthly sessions on the analytics free plan is more than enough for most small to mid-size Shopify stores.
- Intuitive interface with minimal learning curve. Your marketing team, your CX team, and your founder can all use it without training.
- Rage click filtering is a conversion goldmine. This single feature surfaces broken UX faster than any QA process.
- Strong integration ecosystem. Connects naturally with the Shopify tech stack most DTC brands already run.
- Unlimited team seats on all plans. No per-user pricing games, which is rare.
Cons
- Cannot track Shopify's built-in checkout. Shopify does not allow third-party scripts in its native checkout. You can track storefront pages and the order confirmation page, but the actual checkout steps are a black box. This is a Shopify limitation, not a Hotjar one, but it matters.
- No native mobile app support. Hotjar works on mobile web but cannot record native app sessions. If you have a Shopify mobile app, you need a separate tool.
- Session caps can surprise you. High-traffic stores on the Growth plan may burn through session limits faster than expected, especially during sale events.
- Depth of analysis is limited. Hotjar excels at showing you what users do, but advanced statistical analysis, predictive modeling, or deep funnel math requires additional tools.
- Customer support has mixed reviews. Billing and cancellation experiences have drawn criticism on review platforms. Test on the free tier before committing to paid.
Who It's Best For
Shopify stores doing $10K-$500K/month in revenue that want to understand user behavior without hiring a dedicated UX researcher. Specifically:
- Growing DTC brands optimizing product pages and checkout flow for the first time
- Marketing teams that need visual evidence to justify UX changes to stakeholders ("Look, 73% of mobile users never see the Add to Cart button")
- CRO-focused agencies and consultants managing multiple Shopify client stores
- Founders and operators who are hands-on with their site and want to personally watch how customers use it
It is not the best fit for enterprise brands needing mobile app analytics, stores with extremely high traffic that would blow through session caps, or teams that need deep quantitative analysis built into their behavior tool.
How to Get Started
Setting up Hotjar on Shopify is straightforward:
- Create a free Hotjar account at hotjar.com
- Add your Shopify store URL as a new site in your Hotjar dashboard
- Copy the tracking code provided during onboarding
- Install via Shopify Admin: Go to Online Store > Themes > Edit Code, then paste the snippet before the closing
</head>tag in yourtheme.liquidfile - Optional: Add checkout tracking by pasting the code in Settings > Checkout > Additional Scripts (this captures the order confirmation page)
- Verify installation using Hotjar's built-in tracking verification tool
- Set up your first heatmap on a high-traffic product page or your homepage
Alternatively, install one of the Hotjar apps from the Shopify App Store for a no-code setup that handles the snippet injection automatically.
Within 24 hours you will have enough data to generate your first heatmap and watch your first batch of session recordings.
Our Verdict
Rating: 7.5/10
Hotjar earns its reputation as the go-to behavior analytics tool for Shopify stores, and for good reason. The combination of heatmaps, session recordings, and on-site surveys in a single platform with a generous free tier makes it the obvious starting point for any brand serious about conversion optimization.
The Contentsquare merger has added capabilities (AI summaries, enhanced funnels, journey analysis) without destroying the simplicity that made Hotjar popular in the first place. The new usage-based pricing is more transparent than the old sampling model, even if session caps require more attention.
Where Hotjar falls short is depth. It is excellent for identifying problems but less useful for running rigorous quantitative experiments or building predictive models. Think of it as your diagnostic tool, not your complete analytics stack. Pair it with GA4 for quantitative data and a dedicated A/B testing platform for experimentation, and you have a CRO toolkit that covers all the bases.
For Shopify brands spending real money on traffic, not using a behavior analytics tool is like paying for guests to visit a restaurant and never watching whether they enjoy the meal. Hotjar makes watching easy, affordable, and actionable.
