The client01

Fairy Tales Hair Care is a DTC and retail kids hair care brand with clean, parent-trusted formulas: Daily Cleanse, CurlyQ, Tangle Tamer, Rosemary Repel, and Sun & Swim. It sells through its own site, Walmart, and other retailers, so every paid media dollar has to drive online orders and support the retail shelf at the same time.

The challenge02
  • Prove the lift. Show with statistical rigor that YouTube drives ad recall, not just impressions.
  • Find the right parents. “Parents 25 to 54” covers a single-toddler household and a four-kid grade-school home alike.
  • Launch many products at once. Each product solves a different hair concern, so each needs its own audience signal.
The approach03
  • Audience architecture. Custom segments built from competitor search terms and URLs, in-market and affinity segments matched to each product's hair concern, lookalikes seeded from first-party purchasers, and full exclusions of customers, site visitors, and past converters for true new customer acquisition.
  • Creative testing. Four 30-second videos (two concepts, two calls to action) ran through a single Brand Lift study, so the winner carried 90% or greater certainty.
  • Channel orchestration. A YouTube Brand and Search Lift flight, Demand Gen prospecting, Walmart geo Demand Gen in Bakersfield and Fresno, and retargeting, with audiences nested so converters never re-entered prospecting.
  • Measurement. Google's randomized control trial compared an exposed group with a control group to isolate the true lift.
Brand lift results04

On a 21-day YouTube Brand and Search Lift flight targeting parents of toddlers, preschoolers, and grade-schoolers, the campaign delivered 127,000 lifted users at $0.12 each: a +6.7% absolute and +58.4% relative lift in ad recall, from an 11.5% baseline to 18.3% among exposed viewers.

What the study revealed05
  • A clear creative winner. Version 1 with the first call to action drove 45,000 lifted users at $0.09 each, a +92.2% relative lift. The runner-up used the same call to action, confirming it as the driver.
  • The best parent audience. Parents of grade-schoolers (6 to 12) delivered 109,000 lifted users at $0.11 each, 18x the lifted users of the toddler segment.
  • The best screen. Connected TV (YouTube on the big screen) delivered 111,000 lifted users at +89.0% relative lift, against +12.4% on mobile.
Audiences beat demographics06

Builds that layered custom segments, in-market signals, and lookalikes drove 57% to 78% interaction rates. Google's prebuilt parent demographics drove 28% to 30%. Same media dollar, same product, same creative: 2x to 2.5x the engagement.
